The population of Soay sheep on the Island of Hirta in the St. Kilda Archipelago has been the focus of a detailed individual-based study for nearly quarter of a century. Over this time the population has exhibited substantial fluctuations in population size, as well as directional changes in quantitative phenotypic traits. In this seminar I describe both attempts to understand causes of these changes and to develop theory to link evolutionary and ecological dynamics in variable environments.
